Here are a few doggrels written last night.

She said it was love at first sight
But i didn't believe in love at first sight
Who could, when first impressions are so so blind
Nevertheless, I wasn't sure what to expect
As he opened the carefully wrapped box
wondering what brilliant surprise could be inside
could it be a box of chocolates
or the book she was hoping to read
longing's such a minor chord,
full of lamenting
much like the call of loons
on a Northern Lake.

The strangest thing happened on the tram
The sound track to this movie
was the clanking wheels
As the stage coach came into view
I leaned forward trying to see him
Trying to see something I recognised
Everything was so very strange and disconcerting
But at the same time, distracting and diverting
I closed my eyes determined to finish my task
My mother always told me that it was important to finish
so I polished off a dozen oysters and a bottle of bubbly
determined t enjoy what was left of the afternoon.

Last night i dreamt i was a bird
swooping through the sky so free
a kite, it's tail is hard to see
but it's presence is remembered by the colours
the wonderful spread of blue, red, green, dazzling to the eye
colours of freedom of hope of joy
that drained from the sky in the twlight
moon large on the horizon, horrendously orange
but inedible as section by section it disappeared
i am grateful that the ordeal was almost over.

A new piece by a new writer:

Stan;
is slow as toffee
has had his bike forever
rides and rides and rides
balances on that bike at a gobsmakinglly slow pace
rises early and sits still as a statue
smokes incessantly
has brown nicotine-stained fingers
eats chips from the bag
arrived in a boat with his family
once could make the most beautiful furniture
loved that quiet work
can still smell the shavings
has a furrowed brow
has the neatest bedsit

The Thank you for listening@Support After Suicide Mentors Writing Project is up and running.  We are very lucky to have three wonderful guest mentors:  Cate Kennedy (short story), Terry Jaensch (poetry) and Andrew McSweeney (music).  I (writing for performance) am the fourth mentor and am thrilled to be working with this group of dedicated and talented writers for yet another year.
